Minnesota Vikings –

The Vikings kicked off their preseason playing like the team they are known to be. Week 1’s 17-10 win over the Buffalo Bills featured them using their imposing defense and balanced offense to control much of the pace.

Case Keenum got most of the snaps under center, and he looked good, completing 11 of his 16 passes for 121 yards. It was good that he threw well since he was unable to get much from his backfield, who only had gave the team 3.1 yards per carry – Dalvin Cook, in particular, only had 13 yards in five carries (2.6 YPC). Keenum and the other QBs did nine checkdowns to their RBs to help them be in form, but it just wasn’t the backs’ night.

Their defense, meanwhile, had 11 QB hits, three sacks, four tackles for loss, and seven passes defended. It’s a good all-around defensive performance to build on to, especially if they are now going up against one of the best stop units in the league.

Known for their ever so disruptive defense, the Seahawks debut with offense in their minds. They pummeled the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, 48-17 (34 were scored in the first half), and had 458 total yards.

Trevone Boykin and Austin Davis, who got most of the quarterbacking duties, looked comfortable in the field. They collectively went 19-for-24 for 299 yards, with one TD and one interception – Boykin also gained 31 on the ground and had one score. Much of their numbers were courtesy of their receivers’ hands and big play abilities, most notably Kasen Williams, who caught all four passes thrown at him and netted 29.8 yards per catch. We should continue seeing those three be big parts of the offense this preseason.

The defense wasn’t as impactful as you’d like it to be, particularly against the pass, as they gave up an average 18.2 yards per completion. All of it wasn’t because they had second/third stringers on – Bobby Wagner, KJ Wright, Kam Chancellor, and Richard Sherman all played.

Seattle put up some offensive fireworks a weekend ago and that was on the road.  They are facing a Vikings squad that did not exactly light the world on fire.  Unless the Minnesota second and third teams can learn to shut down this Seahawks offense, then we should probably expect some more of the same.
